Playing the communal card, Atiq tried his luck as an independent candidate from the Allahabad West seat in the 1989 UP assembly elections to avoid a police encounter. After this, in the year 1991, he won the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections as an independent candidate from the Allahabad West constituency.
He joined the Samajwadi Party in 1993 and remained a member of the party till 1999. Atiq won the MLA election in Uttar Pradesh for the third time in 1993 as an independent candidate from Allahabad West.
Atiq Ahmed contested the elections from the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly constituency in 1996 and after joining Apna Dal in 1999, Atiq became its president and remained in the post till 2003.
Later, in the year 2002, he was re-elected as an MLA from the Vachan constituency in Allahabad, West Bengal and he contested from the Apna Dal party, after which he rejoined the Samajwadi Party in the year 2003.
Thereafter, in the year 2012, Atiq Ahmed contested an Apna Dal party ticket as according to reports he was expelled by Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party refused to give him a ticket. In 2021, Atiq lost the seat to Pooja Pal, widow of BJP leader Raju Pal, and joined the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Party.
